Flat glass
In 2002 Maltha opened the world´s first flat glass processing plant in the Belgian town of Kaulille. In the meantime this plant has moved to Lommel and been further expanded. Here are all types of flat glass reprocessed into a wide range of semi-finished products. The plant has a capacity of 200,000 tonnes of net product per year.

Flat glass is applied in different environments than packaging glass. It therefore has different contaminants, and that requires a different method of processing. For example, flat glass can have metal and/or foil incorporated into it. Metal waste, debris, wood, plastic and rubber often come together with the glass.
In order to remove all these foreign materials, the glass is put through a series of advanced separation techniques. The parts pass through magnets, sieves, cyclones, eddy current separators, laser and camera technology and even x-ray detection facilities. The result is a batch of pure flat glass cullet which forms the basis for valuable new glass products.
A unique aspect of all this is Maltha’s close collaboration with the flat glass industry, which has led to the end products of the glass recycling process being reutilised as full-fledged raw materials in this industry.
